Predictions: NPD October 2008

NPD video game sales data for October 2008 will be released this Thursday.  Please note that September is tracked as a 5 week month, while October is tracked as a 4 week month. Thus, while total hardware sales in October might be lower than in September for a console, the weekly sales rate of a console might have still increased from September.

Predictions

Format: “Total Hardware” (“Weekly Hardware” | “% change of weekly sales over September”)

Wii: 760k ( 190k | +38.28% )
360: 268k ( 67k | –3.51% )
PS3: 194k ( 48.5k | +4.34% )
PS2: 144k ( 36k | +3.75% )
NDS: 556k ( 139k | +29.47% )
PSP: 208k ( 52k | +9.2% )

Notes regarding my predictions:

  • Wii will see a very sizable increase over September due to an influx of new supply. DS will see a similar bump.
  • 360 should see a less than expected drop off in sales after the the price drop in September.
  • PS3, PS2, and PSP will see small increases in sales thanks to the approaching holiday.

Actual sales data from The NPD Group will be released on Thursday, November 13th after market close (4:00 PM).

I am quite bored with the Wii.

Yeah, been quite a dry spell, eh? I will say, if you haven’t checked out World of Goo on WiiWare, you really should – it’s excellent. There are a few games I’ll pick up next year after price drops (de Blob, for instance), but this holiday is rough from a content perspective. It won’t affect Wii sales, though, and it does look like there will be a pretty steady stream of content next year.

What should I be looking forward to next year?

Dave: The holiday lineup for the Wii is very subpar compared to PS3’s and Xbox 360’s. There are a few games depending on your taste, like Deadly Creatures and skate it. As far as next year, I’m really looking forward to MadWorld and The Conduit.

I’m really curious to see how Wii Music sells in the U.S.

@Dave: I’m actually pretty excited by Wii’s lineup next year. No More Heroes 2, Tenchu 4, Fatal Frame 4 (if it’s brought over), Little King Story, Rune Factory, Fragile, Punch-Out, The Conduit, MadWorld. Then there’s discussed but unrevealed stuff like Pikmin 3, Red Steel 2, other EAD projects. Should be a good year.

@Tony: Agreed. Unfortunately, it may be hard to really get a handle on its performance. My guess is that it will have decent legs, but I don’t know if it will set up camp in the Top 10 like the other “Wii” games have. That will make it hard to track based on the limited data we get.
